Candidate Biography & Statement: Lauringle Mitchell

My name is Lauringle Mitchell. (Many will also know me as Lolo) I have been a resident of the Village of Mamaroneck for 39 years. I am a former student of the Hommocks Middle School and Mamaroneck High. I am a graduate of the MHS class of 1993. Upon graduation, I earned a football Scholarship to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where I went on to graduate with a Bachelors in Political Science.

Education was always a key component of my household growing up. By attending the Mamaroneck School system, I feel myself, my sister and nephew were supported to reach greatness both in and out of the classroom. With this spirit, I look to encourage and support future students through my work on the Board.

After graduation, I worked for the district for 22 years. During that period, I was able to work in various different jobs, which in turn has given me a unique perspective on the needs of our schools on a daily basis. I was able to work as Campus Supervisor, a job that allowed me to see the needs of all students on a daily basis. I was also able to work with the custodial staff and special needs as a substitute. With this job experience, I feel if voted to the Mamaroneck School Board, I will be able to share a practical, well informed perspective on the needs of our students and faculty alike.

A key area that I would like to focus on if elected is to improve communication between various parts of our community that make up our schools. A way I will look to start the process is to conduct a Town Hall on different topics. This will give the public a chance to engage with fruitful, candid conversation with the Board. It will also allow the Board to hear the concerns of the public in regards to key topics.

An area that I feel needs some work in our school district is equity and accessibility. It is important that we ensure that we are devoting the same time, energy and resources to every child. We also have to continuously support the child’s pursuit in education, no matter what that direction is. Providing all families with important information on their child’s current and future success in our schools is a must. While our current equity team is a start, we have to engage in fruitful dialog, so that we can implement the changes that are needed to make our schools more equitable. Lastly, we want to create an all inclusive atmosphere in our schools where all children will feel comfortable.
