Candidate Biography & Statement: Angelique Shingler

I am Angelique Shingler, an Army “brat.” I grew up everywhere, starting pre-k in Germany before moving to WA and later TX. Military communities are diverse. This upbringing informed my core values: commitment to service, integrity, community, family, resilience, and the importance of education. I studied Political Science and German at the University of North Texas. After graduating magna cum laude, I earned a JD at the University of Buffalo Law School. I joined an international law firm as a Litigation Associate, chaired its Black and Latino Diversity Subcommittee, coordinated the 8th grade summer program, and mentored students.

After nine years, I transitioned to financial crimes compliance in the financial services industry and I’m now an Executive Director. I am committed to public service, including pro bono work, representing domestic violence victims, asylum seekers, and working with My Sisters Place. I currently sit on the Board of the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, which advances racial and economic justice.

We moved to Mamaroneck when my son was four because of the excellent public schools and community. My son attended Pre-K at Central and is now a MAS 5th grader. We are both active in local activities.

Why are you running for the Mamaroneck School Board?

I am running for the School Board because I’m eager to serve on a team that advocates for every student and equips them for success because we are Stronger Together. Our experience with MAS has been wonderful and I want every student and family to have that experience. I bring unique qualities and experience as a lawyer, compliance expert, and in leading large multinational teams. I have a keen ability to listen and seek out input from all stakeholders while also possessing the confidence to make decisions. I will bring all of these qualities to my role and use them to incorporate the needs and priorities of the community into strong policies.

Tightening curriculum alignment in a nurturing, supportive environment is a key priority as it enhances academic achievement and boosts engagement. Given my exposure to multiple education systems, I am committed to providing every student with equal access to a quality education that prepares them for college or the careers they want. Lastly, I am committed to approachable, accessible, and transparent communication with students, teachers, and families.

I am asking you to vote for me on May 17th to serve on the Mamaroneck School Board.

What is the biggest issue facing our schools and how can you help to address it?

Building and enhancing trust is a connecting theme that will help our community to be Stronger Together. I have heard from so many families that they need clear and accessible information about curriculum, special education resources, social emotional supports, etc. This is why optimizing community conversations and involvement is important to me.

Community engagement can help us provide students with what they need to excel academically and socially. It can also drive meaningful progress towards the District’s equity goals by cultivating a culture of belonging and mutual respect. This is why I will listen to the concerns of the community and provide transparency around why and how decisions are made. I will prioritize town halls where community members can engage in actual dialogue with board members. The voices of parents, students, and teachers should be sought out and included in decision-making and I will partner with the administration to prioritize this.

Communication should be approachable, accessible, and transparent. I am interested in hearing from you, the community, about your experiences and concerns so I can be your advocate. Please go to www.angeliqueforschoolboard.com to learn about me and contact me at angeliqueforschoolboard@gmail.com.
