Town Clerk Study Consensus Meeting

In the summer of 2022, the Town Board announced a meeting to discuss changing the Town Clerk from an elected to appointed official. The item was dropped from the agenda that night. However, the Board of the League of Women Voters of Larchmont-Mamaroneck believed a study should be undertaken so that our League would have an official position if this issue arose again. A study committee was formed. The members researched the issue and interviewed and spoke with Westchester County clerks and others knowledgeable in state government. The study committee recommended that the Town Clerk remain an elected official.

Study Committee Members: Anne McAndrews, Louise Perez, Elisabeth Radow, Marlene Kolbert

Under the League of Women Voters’ procedure, a consensus meeting was necessary for this to become the official position of our local League. All League positions are arrived at by consensus. While the LWV does not support individual candidates, it actively promotes its positions arrived at after consensus.

A consensus meeting was held on January 11, with Kathy Meany, President of the League of Women Voters – Westchester County, moderating the discussion. (Please note that according to League procedure, only those League members residing In the Town of Mamaroneck could participate). In addition to the presentation by the study committee, a memorandum outlining the Mamaroneck Town Council’s positions was distributed to the participants. After discussion, Ms. Meany called for a sense of the group, and consensus was reached to make the official position of the League of Women Voters of Larchmont-Mamaroneck that the Town Clerk remains an elected official.
