The League & Passage of NYS Prop 1: How We Made A Difference

A Message from our LWV-LM Co-presidents on the Passage of Prop 1

Dear League Members and Friends,

Thanks goes to the League of Women Voters of New York State Equal Rights Taskforce for its tireless effort over the past twenty-two months to educate New Yorkers about Prop 1, which was affirmed by voters to enshrine in the state constitution women’s reproductive health care rights and the rights of countless New Yorkers against discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity. Our chapter was one of 41 League chapters in the state that powered the 500-member Coalition.

Click for a report on how New Yorkers voted.

Our chapter:

·     Recruited a member to join the Task Force

·     Hosted a program on Prop 1 at the Larchmont Library

·     Educated voters at the Farmers Market and Larchmont Day

·     Shared information via email, website, and Instagram

·     Canvassed during early voting, reminding people to flip their ballots for Prop 1

We owe special thanks to our LWV-LM member Terry Toll, who has devoted most of the past two years to preparing us for Prop 1.

A word from Terry about her experience on the ground:

“With immense pride and gratitude, I thank our LWV-LM chapter and its supporters for the opportunity to participate in the statewide effort to pass Prop 1. November 5, 2024, stands out as a day of triumph for protecting women’s rights and human rights.

Fact-based preparation and support from the League, Coalition members and the NYS Attorney General secured my resolve to educate and advocate for fellow voters’ fundamental rights. All of us persisted despite major legal challenges to secure the amendment proposition on the ballot, widespread disinformation campaigns, some hectoring at teach-ins, attacks on the morality of protecting women’s reproductive health, and direct efforts to silence us.

Empowering voters and defending democracy are 100-year-old traditions of the League of Women Voters.  It was a privilege to engage in these traditions in the service of protecting our fundamental rights.”

Additional thanks go to the League of Women Voters for giving each of us the opportunity to advocate for policies and legislation that can make a positive difference in the lives of our communities. Please join us as we continue to seek ways to make improvements at the local, county, state and national level. Contact us at: lwvoflarchmontmamaroneck@gmail.com
